In Scott Frank´s screenplay, the lines in the movie were delivered just the way that they were written, seriously, without reaction. The fact that many lines were funny, labeled Get Shorty a comedy, and helped make it a box-office hit. The story is about Chili Palmer, (John Travolta) who is ´fired´ by his unstable loanshark boss, Ray Bones (Dennis Farina). Ray sends Chili to Vegas to collect a bad debt, and a casino boss there enlists Chili to find an even bigger deadbeat: Harry Zimm (Gene Hackman), a Hollywood producer of low-budget horror films. In Hollywood, Chili meets Harry, as well as his scream-queen leading lady, Karen Flores (Rene Russo); Harry’s drug-dealing financier, Bo Catlett (Delroy Lindo), and his muscle, Bear (James Gandolfini). ´Shorty´ is Karen’s ex, Martin Weir (Danny DeVito), a big star with a giant ego. Chili learns that being a wiseguy helped when you wanted to produce movies. Get Shorty was win, win, win. Everything worked perfectly. The film had a winning combination in Danny DeVito’s Jersey Films, screenwriter Scott Frank and Director Barry Sonnenfeld. Everybody liked Elmore´s work and wanted to put it on the screen – the right way. Elmore was on the set four days in Beverly Hills. A couple of times, Barry came over after the shot and asked him what he thought, and if he had any suggestions. Elmore was surprised and tickled a little that a director would ask the book writer his opinion.“
