1973 wird ein von Militärs begleitetes Forschungsteam auf die bislang unentdeckte Südpazifik-Insel Skull Island geschickt. Dort treffen sie auf den Riesenaffen Kong (aka King Kong).
Rückblickend betrachtet ist „Kong: Skull Island“ der beste der neuen King-Kong-Filme. Dabei ist das starbesetzte blöde Kriegsspektakel nur ein „Apocalypse Now“-Monsterfilm-Mashup mit Zitaten aus den allerersten King-Kong-Film.
